The Pyramid Club is a nightclub in the East Village of Manhattan, New York City. After opening in 1979, the Pyramid helped define the East Village drag and gay scenes of the 1980s. The club is located at 101 Avenue A in Manhattan.
In the late 70s and early 80s, when mega-clubs like Studio 54 and The Limelight, dominated New York nightlife, the struggling artists, actors, musicians, and drag queens who lived in the East Village created their own, more intimately-scaled scene. They began taking over some of the local dive bars, such as the Holiday on St. Mark's Place, and created new clubs where there previously were none, as was the case with Club 57 (in the basement of a church), and 8BC, on a block of abandoned tenements.
The club became a hangout for "a new breed of politicized drag performers" like Lypsinka, Lady Bunny, and RuPaul, whose first New York City show was at the Pyramid Club in 1982. On Labor Day 1985, Pyramid performer Lady Bunny hosted the Wigstock Festival in Tompkins Square Park. Andy Warhol and Debbie Harry dropped in the Pyramid to do a feature on the club for MTV, and Madonna appeared at her first AIDS benefit at the club. Both Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers played their first New York City concerts there. From 1992-95, Blacklips Performance Cult, a collective founded by Antony Hegarty, presented plays at Pyramid every Monday at midnight.
The Pyramid Club Reviews
If you enjoy good 80’s music this is your place. Has the best environment on the inside. Bouncers are very nice and the drinks are perfectly priced. Paid 8USD cover to get inside. Got the best night o... more »
I had just decided it was time to dance again. Had not been on a club since 2004, let alone dancing 80s music. It was an 80s music style on the ground floor and 90s music if one went to the basement. ... more »
Had a super fun night , until I realized my purse had been opened and my phone stolen , even though i had it closed and with me all the time. As I reported it to security , the guy couldn’t care less, and gave me the impression that happened often there. Be aware! Such a shame, loved going there, but not a safe place. Don’t know what the thief will do with a completely locked phone , as I immediately reported it to the carrier and had it blocked for good .
Crazy place. Definitely falls into the category of a 'dive bar'. But it's a very friendly place with a bunch of characters. It's not tiny, but on the smaller side. Still has a nice sized dance floor in the back. It's an 80's themed bar and plays mainly music from that decade (with some from the late 70s and early 90s). They have a loyal crowd and they seem to care about their customers. Went on a Saturday night. It got crowded, but never felt overcrowded. There was an $8 cover charge 🤷♂️. Drink prices were reasonable. Not the greatest beer selection, but they have all the liquors. Everything served in disposable cups or plastic "pint glasses".
