One of the city's hidden gems, The Met Cloisters incorporates parts from five abbeys disassembled in Europe and reconstructed in New York between 1934 and 1939. Situated on a hill overlooking the Hudson River, this building now forms an integral part of a medieval-style complex designed by architect Charles Collens. You can stroll through the surrounding herb gardens or walk into the on-site museum to see an extensive collection of art and architecture from medieval Europe, including limestone windows and altarpieces designed in the 15th century. To learn the history behind the exhibits, pick up an audio guide at the entrance. We had a great period with our attendant. An educational tour that shelters many of the spaces we were hoping to see. He was excited and made sure that everybody heard and had a great trip. more »
If you like architecture and medevial art, then this is your place. It's on the northwestern tip of the island and for $25, you can gorge yourself in both. We particularly like the gardens and tapestries that are on display. We've visited 3 times and there are many exhibits that never move, but we've been impressed with the new exhibits each time we've visited. Take the A train to one of Manhattan's best kept secrets. Beautiful tranquil park with an awe inspiring view of the Hudson river. The museum is a gem. Worth the trip.
The architecture alone of this place is gorgeous, let alone the stuff on display inside.Came here for a work outing and got to walk around for an hour. It was not enough time for me to fully sink in all of museum artifacts, but I really enjoyed the space. The garden in the back with all of the medieval plants used for medicines and poisons was something different and unexpected. It also looks out over a beautiful picture of the Hudson- a do not miss view!I will warn you that getting to the stop of the hill is quite a trek, and unless you enjoy uphill climbing, I recommend taking a car. It is very steep and there are many stairs. I wish I had known that before visiting.
