Temple Emanu-El, New York City

Like all sanctuaries, Temple Emanu-El is a visible token of the presence of God in the midst of His people. It sheds a beauty that is the beauty of holiness, and it stands as a beacon light in a tradition that stands as a champion of justice, brotherhood and peace.

Founded in 1845, Temple Emanu-El is the third oldest Reform Jewish congregation in the United States. Its odyssey mirrors that of the Jewish community in New York. Originally located on a remote corner on the Lower East Side, it moved progressively, both geographically and spiritually, further uptown, and is now located in the very heart of New York City, on the Upper East Side.
For travelers who use our custom trip planner, New York City holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Temple Emanu-El and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • This beautiful and historic landmark is open for self guided tours most weekdays. Worship is at 6pm on Friday nights and 1030am on Saturday mornings, with a world class choir, organ, and often other instrumentation, mixing classic and contemporary liturgical music. The preschool, religious school, and other family and adult programs are among the very best in NYC, as you would expect from this 175 year old institution. The community is friendly and visitors are always welcomed warmly.
  • Magnificent temple in New York City. Very grand and beautiful. Highly recommend visiting. The guides there are also very nice.
