Manhattan's military and maritime history museum, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum houses a large collection of craft that includes an aircraft carrier, submarine, NASA's prototype space shuttle, and a supersonic reconnaissance plane. Originally opened in 1982, the museum underwent a 22-year renovation of its facilities, reopening in 2008. You can access it by public bus or subway, and spend the day journeying through the evolution of sea, air, and space vessels. The Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases Enterprise, named after the starship from the popular "Star Trek" TV series and built to perform test flights in the atmosphere, along with artifacts, photos, audio, and films covering NASA's space shuttle program. Try your hand at flying a supersonic jet by visiting the virtual flight zone, designed with cutting-edge multi-sensory technology. My father and i had a great time here. I’m 33 and not a big museum goer, my dad is 70 and loves military and maritime history so... off we went. Arriving was easy and the line was no big deal at all. Just getting onto an aircraft carrier was cool and the inside is so accessible to kids but we loved it too. It was easy to get around and generally very enjoyable. There aren’t a lot of museum employees all over the place which is kind of nice. They’re there when you need them but you can really explore too. The Enterprise exhibit on the “roof” is way cooler than I expected! I left with EVEN more respect for our military and it’s veterans than I had before. Landing a fighter plane on this thing in the days before technology evolved to be what it is today is a heroic feat in and of itself. I wish I’d brought my veteran grandfather here. If you have kids, military enthusiasts or think planes are interesting, don’t miss this!
I had amazing experience in here! I wish I spent longer time. So many different types of airplanes to explore. I was amazed with the engineering and technology they had decades ago! Each airplane has a story! The ship itself is so big! The information cards and monitors for each airplane was prepared well so they provide plenty of information. You do not just see the airplanes but even with an unguided tour you learn a lot. They have a parking place for groups which is actually first come first served. There was space when I took my group there. The person at the gate was so helpful and kind to arrange a parking space for my passenger van. He said it was free for student groups. I didn’t have any trouble with finding the place and parking the vehicle. It’s definitely worth for the price.
