Rucker Park is a basketball court in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, at 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard across the street from the former Polo Grounds site; it is geographically at the base of a large cliff named Coogan's Bluff. Many who played at the park in the Rucker Tournament achieved a level of fame for their abilities, and several have gone on to play in the NBA.Rucker Park was featured in the TNT television film On Hallowed Ground: Streetball Champions of Rucker Park, which aired in 2000 and won a Sports Emmy Award.HistoryThe court is named after Holcombe Rucker, a local teacher and a playground director for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Rucker started a basketball tournament in 1950 in order to help less-fortunate kids stay off the streets and aim for college careers. The players in the Rucker Tournament featured slam dunks, crossover dribbles, and bravado that excited the crowd, a playing style then foreign to the National Basketball Association (NBA).Make Holcombe Rucker Park a part of your New York City vacation plans using our New York City trip itinerary planning site .

There were even some kids who left us the ball to throw some baskets and some pictures.

Such an amazing, historic park. There's a playground for kids, sprinklers which are great for hot summer days, and an amazing basketball court. We went during some school tournament event, and it was great to see young kids play their hearts out and win. Such a great experience, I'm glad I came here!
You HAVE to visit this place if you love basketball. Tiny Archibald, Dr. J, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson--these men have all graced this court and dominated. If you go with anyone who doesn't understand, the spectacle may be dimmed, but for those who love the sport of basketball, this is Mecca: a necessary pilgrimage!
