Federal Hall, New York City

Visit the birthplace of American democracy at Federal Hall. The current Neoclassical structure was erected on the site of the nation's first central government, which was demolished in 1812. Since 1842, when it was completed, the building changed purpose several times. Today it serves as a national memorial and museum exhibiting artifacts related to George Washington's inauguration and the First Amendment--the freedom of the press in particular. A visit to Federal Hall represents just the start of the adventure when you use our New York City road trip planning app to plot your vacation.
