Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, New York City

Welcome to the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in the City of New York. Saint Mary’s was founded in 1868 to be the Episcopal parish church of the neighborhood known since 1904 as Times Square. Its first parish church stood where the Booth Theater now stands on West Forty-fifth Street. We moved to our second and present church home on December 8, 1895, but since December 8, 1870, Saint Mary’s doors have been open daily for worship, prayer and refuge for all.

Worship is central to our common life. Because of our location and the particular richness of our traditions, Saint Mary’s is a local parish community and a community of people around the world who believe in the importance of this witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ in the heart of New York City.

Saint Mary’s is not supported by endowments, but by the giving of those who worship here. In addition to supporting our outreach programs and those of the Diocese of New York, your gifts help us to keep our doors open so that we can continue to be a gathering place for outreach and mission, as well as a house of prayer for all people.

  • The church is very beautiful, and located right at the heart of Lower Manhattan, near Times Square. I loved how it was peaceful and quiet!  more »
  • Somewhat off the beaten path. We visited on a Sunday afternoon. Not as spectacular as St. Patrick’s, but worth seeing. There were homeless sleeping in some of the pews, but they didn’t bother anyone. ...  more »

  • Quiet place to pray just one block from Times Square. Beautiful architecture
  • "Smoky Mary" is a famous example of a "high Episcopal" church with bells and LOTS of smells (incense). The noon mass is spoken, except on Holy Days and is a great respite in the mode of the day.
