The parish was established in 1859 or 1860 for German Catholics. Although the building has remained in one location, street name changes in Harlem have affected the address. The address listed in 1892 was at 125th Street and the corner of 9th Avenue.
Built before the American Civil War, the Romanesque Revival red brick church was built and dedicated in 1860. It was enlarged in 1871 and altered in 1889 by the Herter Brothers. As part of the alteration, the window over the entrance became a niche for a statue of St. Joseph holding the infant.
The church had a school and convent affiliated with it, which were located in the former Manhattanville Presbyterian Church, a Greek Revival structure directly behind the church. The parish school was among 27 in the Archdiocese of New York closed by Archbishop Dolan on January 11, 2011.

We were at Easter and there were many lovely emperifollado children. The atmosphere is very friendly and the priest is a charm,he's white but he moves like a. The chorus perishes professionally from how good they are. Maybe I was a little embarrassed to be a tourist at your celebration.
It is not the most tourist, or recommended by the guides, but thanks to that is not crowded (arriving even a tad late we had room to sit at the top) and is a real pass. The voices of the incredible Gospel choir... The mass, despite being in English, was perfectly understood and you could follow it without major problems. Pass the basket, but the contribution is voluntary and the amount you choose. Do not look bad if you donate nothing (aunq costs nothing to throw something, Porq really is incredible) make you feel one more of the parish
We attended a marvellous gospel mass. It was a wonderful experience from any point of view: the music, the choir, the prayers, the sermon. We were tourist there but the mass was not for tourists at all and this is the reason I liked it. It's a Catholic Mass so if you are used to it it's easy to follow even in a foreign language.
Absolutely amazing. Father Nolan and the parish community are powerful examples of the principles of Christianity and how Great God is! The choir is magnificent!
