  • Completely enjoyed our 5 1/2 stay here. There’s lots to see and do without doing the extra tours. Although I am sure they will enhance your knowledge and your stay. Go early on a hot day and get in th...  more »
  • My husband has been to DC before but I hadn't, so I wanted to do some things that he hadn't ever done but wanted to. This was one of them. We could have spent even several more hours here (I think we ...  more »
  • We really enjoyed our time at Mount Vernon. I suggest allowing a good 4 hours if not more for your visit. We could've been there longer but it was warm and we were pooped! The workforce is helpful and knowledgeable. Obviously they are passionate about their jobs! I have a suggestion: I noticed much confusion about/around the mansion tour (actual residence of our 1st President). Better signage and explanation for visitors might help. Random people were walking around and away from groups, past the lines, etc. Anyway, the grounds and residence are beautiful, informative and enjoyable for people of all ages. We also enjoyed the restaurant. Great quality food and fair prices!
  • I visited this historic site with our high school seniors as part of a history tour. Having just visited Valley Forge and Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the students had a greater appreciation for the site's significance. This privately-owned site is accessible by Metro Bus or just a 30-minute car ride from D.C. We were able to walk up to the ticket counter and get 17 tickets for the mansion tour without any wait in line although there were 30 coach buses in the parking lot. The staff at the counter was very friendly and welcoming. The opening 18-minute video on George Washington was a perfect start to the tour. If you haven't made reservations for a tour guide, an audio-recorded guide is available for an additional $7 and is worth it. The plantation is spread over 8,000 acres with buildings, gardens, wooded trails, and a cemetery. Of course, George and Martha Washington are buried here. Nearby is the burial memorial grounds for those who were enslaved on the plantation. Before exiting, be sure to visit the exhibit honoring the enslaved people. It is worth spending 30 minutes or more reading and interacting with the exhibits. The food court is unsurprisingly overpriced but convenient. There are several options including a deli, pizza, hamburgers, and icecream.
