Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey

4.5
Located on the site of a former sardine cannery on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, Monterey Bay Aquarium features an 8.5 m (28 ft) viewing tank that was the first in the world to grow giant kelp. The aquarium also holds thousands of plants and animals representing more than 600 different species. You can inspect the creatures of the kelp forest from several levels in the building. Visit the largest tank in the aquarium--with one of the biggest single-paned windows in the world--for a rare chance to observe a population of ocean sunfish in captivity. Other highlights include exhibits of stingrays, bluefin tuna, jellyfish, and sea otters, viewable from above and below the waterline. • I loved my visit to the aquarium in every way except for the crowds of noisy and raucous families. It's my fault for going on a Saturday, but despite the crowds and poorly behaved kids, I still had a ...  more »

  • I love this place so much. I have amazing memories from going as a child and live making new memories with my kids. There are two interactive, educational areas for toddlers and they are so. much. fun. It's great watching them play games and learn about the kelp forest, otters and snowy plovers. Admission is a little steep, so if you're planning on going more than once in a year, get a membership, it pays for itself. Family memberships are $300 and when each adult (over 12) is $50 and each kid (3-11) is $35, it just makes sense.
  • What needs to be said about the MBA? It's hard to say as I've grown up seeing this beautiful educational location flourish. It's a great place to take the kids, a great date, a great afternoon on your own. There really isn't a bad time to go and hang out with all the amazing exhibits. Also, if you can swing it, my daughter and I highly recommend splurging for an overnight some time. It is magical!
