Waikiki Aquarium, Honolulu

3.4
#4 of 6 in Zoos & Aquariums in Hawaii
Thanks to Waikiki Aquarium you won’t need scuba gear to see all the magnificence of Hawaiian marine life. Established in 1904, the aquarium is one of the oldest in the United States. Since its beginning, the aquarium’s mission was to display, preserve, and study the abundance of local species. The themed exhibits include everything from corals, jellyfish, and octopuses, to turtles and seals. At one moment you’ll be admiring the beauty and the colors of Hawaiian fish, and at the next you’ll be eye-to-eye with a shark. Touch ponds provide a lot of fun for kids and adults alike. Audio tours are available with the admission, and while this aquarium might not be the biggest one, it offers great opportunities for learning and enjoyment. • Although the aquarium was small it was well maintained. There were several volunteers and staff members to answer questions and explain things. The tanks were well marked so that you could read...  more »
  • Not a jumbo aquarium but a nice collection of local sea life. Lots of corals and jellies. Very pleasent and peaceful way to spend an hour or two. Adults are $12 and seniors only $5. Enjoyed this much....  more »

  • While this aquarium is small in size it more than makes up for it in the quality of the exhibits. The number of displays with live coral is much higher than you would find in most larger aquariums. It isn't too expensive to visit and if you live there or are a member it's even better. I suggest visiting on week days as they are usually quieter and less crowded. My kids, who usually get bored pretty quickly can easily spend a couple of hours here without complaining. There is no snack bar or anything like that just in case you were wondering.
  • After snorkeling the beach and the north shore we thought we would give the aquarium a try. It was great. The kids were amazed by all of the unique creatures. We saw a zebra shark in a huge aquarium , loads of amazing tropical fish and my daughters favorite the sea horses. The seal habitat was closed and why we gave it a four but overall a great experience. The entire space can be done in an hour. Tip: Go early for free parking.
