Haleakala Crater, Haleakala National Park

4.7
#1 of 32 in Nature in Maui
Known primarily for its dramatic sunrises and sunsets, Haleakala Crater is the world's largest dormant volcano, forming more than 75 percent of the island of Maui. Over a million years old, the volcano is locally known as the "House of the Sun," its tallest peak rising up to 3,055 m (10,023 ft) above sea level. You can reach the summit, gaze into the crater, or walk across its floor by hiking up a series of rugged trails. Though there's little chance of an eruption, you must be extremely careful on the steep and often treacherous paths. Check the weather before you go and dress appropriately for cold temperatures at the summit. • The view from the crater is wonderful. Also the hikes into the crater (which isn't a real crater) is a good hike. Generally you will find hikes for a small tour but also for longer hikes.  more »
  • To find yourself above the clouds after crossing very different landscapes: desert plains, valleys with cows or horses, forests and lush vegetation... The national park and its surroundings raise their reputation A must visit of a stay in Maui It takes $25 to enter even for a few hours Arrived for sunset it is necessary to provide warm clothes or plaids because the wait takes several hours But the show is magical especially if you choose the right side of the crater above the visitor center.

  • If you do one thing in Maui ... let this be it! Did the sunset and it was just ... wow... peaceful and expansive
  • Beautiful sunset!!! Plan for cold and wind, but amazing view. Stay after sunset to watch the stars from above the clouds.
