Amphitheater Lake is located in Grand Teton National Park, in the U. S. state of Wyoming. Amphitheater Lake is only .20 miles (0.32 km) west of Surprise Lake and can be accessed via a strenuous climb of just under 10 miles (16 km) round trip from the Lupine Meadows trailhead. Disappointment Peak is .50 miles (0.80 km) WNW of the lake.

  • This trail is actually more than 10 miles roundtrip. Two mileage trackers confirmed this, as have the trackers of many other hikers. We took our two kids (9 & 13), who are fairly experienced hikers.....  more »
  • Very steep hike with beautiful views of lakes and wildlife. It took us 6 1/2 hours roundtrip with a stop for lunch and some side hikes. Surprise Lake and Ampitheatre Lake are both worth the hike if....  more »
  • Spotted 2 black bears by the parking lot and a grizzly mother and her cub 5 minutes into the trail back in July 2018. This hike is challenging and strenuous, but totally worth it for the views of both lakes. Be sure to follow the signs for Amphitheater Lake - with heavy snowfall sometimes the signs are buried and difficult to find.
  • Beautiful lake to hike up to. Make a great long day hike to go up here and back in one day.
