South Kaibab Trail, Grand Canyon National Park

#2 of 16 in Trails in Grand Canyon National Park
Reward yourself with some of the best views Grand Canyon National Park has to offer by hiking South Kaibab Trail. From the trailhead near Yaki Point to the end of the trail at the Bright Angel Campground, the trail is 11.4 km (7.1 mi) long. With the elevation change of 1,460 m (4,780 ft), the trail is pretty steep and hiking its entirety is generally recommended only to seasoned hikers. Those who go the distance will be rewarded with breathtaking, 360-degree views of the Colorado River and Grand Canyon. The trail has little shade and no access to water until you reach the Bright Angel Campground, so dehydration is a serious hazard. It's absolutely essential to bring enough water as well as water purification tablets, because even the water at the camp is not always drinkable. Our Grand Canyon National Park vacation planner makes visiting South Kaibab Trail and other Grand Canyon National Park attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • How is it possible that every few feet the views got better and better? Our family of 6 (ages 13-47) began our hike at 5pm in order to avoid the heat of the day (an excellent option if you can't make ...  more »
  • Choices enough to hiking in this park. The mega load of tourists usually runs only the Rim Trail and does not enter the canyon. This is fortunately in high season just a little less crowded and at Skeleton Point you can see Colorado River just (if you walk 20 meters to the west). You can only get there with shuttle (or car half mile before parking at Viewpoint and walk). Advice in high season, trail is as early as possible to tackle heat and crowds. Ooh Aaah Point is 15 minutes away and Cedar Ridge is 30 minutes away. To get to Skeleton Point you are only half. Return is quite spicy. In Total you make 880 altimeters. On Trail no water. At Cedar Ridge is toilet. Go no further than Skeleton Point in summer.
