Known as the "Battle That Saved Washington", the battle of Monocacy on July 9, 1864 between 15,000 Confederate forces under General Jubal Early, and 6,600 Union forces under General Lew Wallace, marked the last campaign of the Confederacy to carry the war into the north. One of the objectives of this campaign was to capture Washington, D.C.

  • Really nice and knowledgeable park rangers. They went out of their way to answer questions completely. Very scenic. Well maintained. Enough parking when we were there. If history is your thing or you just want somewhere peaceful with nice scenery, I recommend.
  • National Parks are great! This is not a big one, but there's plenty to see and well worth a visit if battlefields are your thing. Rangers were helpful and were able to answer all our questions. Visitor center isn't much, but stop in for a map and to get some background on what happened here and why. Plenty of nice hikes to explore the area. An enjoyable outing!
