Rising above the Bear Lodge Mountains, the name of Devils Tower National Monument is a result of the original name being lost in translation. The Cheyenne and Crow tribes called it "Bear's House" or "Bear's Lair." The tower is surrounded by flat land that offsets its conical shape, made up of igneous rock. Theorists disagree on exactly how it was formed, but many believe it is what remains of an ancient volcano. Up close, you'll notice that the rock is eroded into almost perfect square sections along its base. You'll also see that it is a climber's paradise. This natural wonder is the United States' first National Monument, dedicated in 1906. What an amazing place! Calm, peaceful, a bit surreal. No other structures near it so it really stands out. The walking trail around the tower has great views and it's an easy walk for all ages. Great place to meditate and soak up the vibes which are strong here. It can be climbed if you have the skills. Really cool place to visit and highly recommend the annual National Parks Pass.

Excellent way to introduce kids to national parks/monuments. As this was the first monument established by Theodore Roosevelt. Easy paved hike to do for families although it is a bit longer. We came in the late afternoon and had plenty of time for wandering around and looked incredible at that time of day. Would suggest coming later so you can see it during the night as well, as the stars frame it beautifully as long as it's a clear night. Whether for 15 min or a day, Devils Tower is definitely worth a detour to see for families or on the way to sturgis.
