Notable characters of the Wild West and historical figures of Deadwood are buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery. Established in 1878, the cemetery's most famous graves include those of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Potato Creek Johnny. Originally spread out over two cemeteries, Ingleside and a catholic cemetery, the bodies were moved to the current location in the 1880s to make space for housing on the former Ingleside location. To this day, homeowners in Ingleside occasionally find human remains on their property. You can pick up information on the people buried here at the visitor center. Mount Moriah Cemetery Reviews
Definitely a great place to visit! The cemetery has a great view of the city! We had gone in the off season and thought the place was closed. It was not. The visitors center in closed but you have an ... more »
Beautiful and very peaceful. We had a lovely time just walking through and admiring history. Several deer were nearby too. more »
This was my first stop on my first visit to Deadwood. I knew about the big names that were buried here. I had to hike a little to get to Seth Bullock's resting place and the view from up there was beautiful. The whole cemetery is a beautiful place. Very interesting tombstones to look at. The cemetery is located on a mountain side so there is a lot of steep sidewalks and paths. Bring water and some good walking shoes. The people that run the cemetery and gift shop/museum are very knowledgeable locals that love the history of their town. They can answer any questions you have.
Mount Moriah is one of those locations that if you shrug it off because it's a cemetery, you're missing one of the best spots in the town. Not only is it the location of the "guessed" graves of Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, but several other well-known figures are buried there (Seth Bullock,) and towards the read of the cemetery is a stunning overlook of the actual town. Note: remember you are in the Black Hills. That being said, persons with mobility or health issues should take note that it is a hike up through the cemetery so plan accordingly.
