At Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, learn all about the city of Native Americans that developed and disappeared hundreds of years before Colonists arrived in America. When Cahokia reached its population peak in the 13th century, it had more inhabitants than London. The city disappeared by 1400 BCE, though, and the large mounds--the biggest of which stands 30 m (100 ft) high, 290 m (951 ft) long, and 255 m (836 ft) wide and covers 5.6 hectares (13.8 acres)--are all that remain at this UNESCO World Heritage site. Before touring the site, head into the museum and interpretive center to learn about the city's history and its culture and to see artifacts, such as stone, bone and shell artifacts used both in religious ceremonies and daily life. We were traveling to St. Louis and saw the signs, so we stopped. Did not expect a UNESCO World Heritage site and we were greatly impressed. Yes, you have to like walking, but the descriptive signage..... more »
Absolutely a highlight of my cross country drive. I was so glad we decided to stop. The interpretive center has so much to offer about the history of the mounds. Both young and old can find things of interest here. They also have nicely paved trails around the site. The main and largest mound has steps up to the top. It is a bit of a hike to the top. I wouldn't recommend it for smaller children. I would also suggest a hat and water. The sun can be quite intense during the middle of the day. Overall we had a wonderful experience here. There is no required admission, but donations are suggested.
Fantastic interpretive center and museum. The exhibits are great, and the kids will really enjoy it! The exhibits have drawers at the bottom with additional artifacts inside, so don't miss those! Really worthwhile.
