The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago

4.8
Developed from a free art school and gallery started in the 1860s, The Art Institute of Chicago now holds a permanent collection of more than 300,000 artworks. One of its most beloved paintings is George Seurat's Pointillism masterpiece "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte." Exhibits spread over eight buildings include Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, with additional holdings of Old Masters, European and American decorative arts, and industrial and graphic design. Highlights include paintings by American artists Grant Wood and Edward Hopper, as well as Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Matisse, van Gogh, and Picasso. The main building itself counts among the city's major landmarks, featuring two bronze lions guarding its main entrance. Check the online calendar for special events and temporary exhibits, which often require separate time-stamped tickets. Save time by purchasing your tickets in advance. Because the museum covers so much ground, it helps to map out exhibits you particularly want to see before you start exploring. • This is the ultimate visit to Chicago for art lovers. Right now temporary exhibition Manet that is worth the trip . French painters are in the spotlight as well as contemporary Americans and Modern art. The works are super well highlighted, the museum is very pretty. The restaurant on the third level, Italian, is very good with terrace and view sues the skyscrapers, good food and not unreasonable in terms of price. Have stayed 5 to 6 hours meal included in this museum you can do more of course... audioguide in French for 7 dollars for some of the rest works in English .

  • Was hot inside...maybe because so many people. Most of the employees in the galleries were well informed of the history of the artwork....one not so much. Said she knew nothing about the artwork. Guess it was just a job for her. Was not easy to negotiate a route whereby you could visit all the galleries without backtracking. The selection of art work was tremendous. Well lit galleries. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend the Art Institute.
  • A lot of different styles of art. If you're looking for Dutch, Belgian or other European painters, this is a very good place to see some of their best work. The museum is a beautiful mix of old and new art. The museum contains different small rooms what gives you the chance to admire everything in silence. Best way to enter the museum is to use the "New" entrance because the waiting line is much shorter at this side.
