Just off Chicago's Magnificent Mile, stained-glass pieces by Louis Comfort Tiffany are featured at Richard H. Driehaus Museum, which is tucked away in the Samuel M. Nickerson House. The museum houses the private collection of Chicago philanthropist, businessman, and art lover Richard H. Driehaus, whose foundation continues to fund many of the city's up-and-coming artists. You can view more than 1,500 pieces of textile, furniture, decor, and sculpture here. The stained glass is all around, installed in the windows and embedded in the architecture to better catch the light. Be sure to look up in the sculpture gallery to see the elaborate dome. Choose from guided or self-guided tours, then rest on the Art Nouveau furniture on the third floor. Visit the website to see if any concerts or lectures are taking place here during your visit. This is like nothing else we have ever seen - the woodwork in the various rooms is extraordinary. The tour was comprehensive and very interesting. more »
If you love glimpses into old Chicago, the Driehaus is a must. The woodwork is amazing. The stained glass is to die for. The marble staircases transport one to a bygone era. Although few of the original furnishing remain, the replacements still give one a strong sense of the craftsmanship and opulence available to the wealthiest members of the Chicago elite. Take a guided tour to maximize the experience. One visit will not be enough.
This is a beautifully restored house in a posh neighborhood of Chicago. You can walk around with a paid admission, but I would recommend the guided tour. It is a deal at $5 and you learn a ton from the docent. There are also rotating exhibits on throughout the museum. This was my first time here but it won't be my last!
