Cheyenne Depot Museum, Cheyenne

4.2
The Cheyenne Union Pacific Railroad Depot Museum is located on the south side of 15th Street, at the intersection with Capitol Avenue. The Depot is located—naturally enough—alongside the still-active tracks of the Union Pacific, America’s first transcontinental railroad, in the heart of Cheyenne’s central business district. No longer used as a passenger facility, it sits on the northern side of the railroad’s mainline tracks, and forms the visual cornerstone for downtown Cheyenne. Located on the site of the first Cheyenne Depot, a wood frame building constructed in 1867, the Depot is one of the downtown’s two most significant landmarks. The Depot is prominently placement at one end of Capital Avenue, opposite the Wyoming State Capitol; Cheyenne’s other major historical landmark.

  • We were surprised at the gorgeous Depot Museum in Cheyenne, WY. Attractive, informative nicely restored and helpful docents. A look back at the railroad history across America.  more »
  • Very interesting items to review. Great old train details and a very nice minature set up depicting the travel out west in olden days, doesn't operate every day though so need to check first.  more »

  • We decided to visit this attraction based on overwhelmingly positive Google reviews as well as one of our kids love trains. For the cost, $8/adult, this is an extremely small museum. Upstairs they have a really cool model railroad set up, however, upon our arrival, a Saturday, there was no one available to run the trains. We understand the running of the model trains is dependent on volunteers, so would recommend calling ahead of time if you plan to visit to ensure you get to see them. We did like the chairs upstairs so you can watch trains that come through the rail yard. We were lucky to get to see one come through.
  • Explored everything but the paid part of the museum. Didn’t have time to pick my way through it. Happy to stop by and see one of the places and industries that helped build the west. A very impressive structure!
