Visitors will also get a unique view into the history of Calistoga during its period as a hot springs resort during the 1860s with a series of meticulously detailed dioramas of the city.

California’s first millionaire, Sam Brannan, purchased much of the property for his Hot Springs Resort in 1859. The resort was completed in 1862, and visitors to the Sharpsteen Museum will get a view of the city and resort in the diorama. Created using photographs and prints of the city during that period, the diorama took nearly three years to complete

  • When traveling in a small town, I always try to find the local museum. This is a local gem. The docents are very informative and welcoming. I actually saw an Oscar, it was behind glass, but a real Osc...  more »
  • Quite a good museum. Excellent displays of natural history, and the history of Napa Valley. Sharpsteen was an illustrator working with Disney. Some great displays.  more »

  • Wonderful little museum with lots of dioramas of early Calistoga, artifacts of the gold rush era and of the trek west by settlers who became part of the history of early California. Entirely staffed by volunteers and open 7 days a week almost all year. Great place for young and young at heart!
  • What a cool place for kids and adults! We loved that it has ties to the original Disney gang. Mr. Sharpsteen sure was a talented and fascinating man. My personal museum favorite was the walk through area of house rooms from the 1800's. It is rare to get that close to great quality antiques. My children loved the exhibit where you can watch the train go around the town for $0.25. We're very glad we stopped in and also took time to shop in their reasonably priced gift shop and chat with the friendly and informative staff. Highly recommended!
  • Got an impromptu tour from Lorne which made our visit quite enjoyable. He gave us an informative yet humourous overview of the Sharpsteen's and the town. The museum has some interesting artifacts and stories displayed. Its fairly small so it makes for a fun little side trip.
  • Right next door to the Community center and the Police station. Very interesting and fun
  • An interesting place to learn about History and Calistoga.
