Chateau Montelena, Calistoga

3.9
Try the award-winning Chardonnay, along with other delicious wine varieties, at Chateau Montelena. In 1976, the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay won the Paris Tasting and created a lasting reputation for California winemaking. Today you can explore the 103 hectare (254 acre) property, including vineyards originally planted in 1896 by Alfred Loving Tubbs and replanted in 1972. Enjoy a picnic by the Chinese garden and Jade Lake. The winery offers several different tours, including current tastings, limited-release tastings, and vineyard tours, where you'll learn about Napa Valley winemaking and what makes these particular wines worth tasting. Finally, sample the wines made on site. Wines are available for purchase from the wine shop. • This place is aesthetically magical and fun. This is a must if you want to take great pictures and enjoy some decent wine. My experience with the staff was fun and they made great recommendations. I have to admit that this is the place to bring a date and not so much for large groups of friends. It’s more of a romantic place. I have seen other reviews complaining about the customer service here, but my experience was amazing. The employees seem to have a passion for their job and seemed to make good recommendations about the wine.
  • Recommended to stop here at least once for the provenance, but does get incredibly busy. The building and grounds are beautiful. However, similar quality chards and better cabs can be had elsewhere if you are coming for the wine.
  • Great wine and beautiful grounds. I visited when this place was not busy and the staff was happy to chat and to tell a lot about the wine and the history of the place. I loved the exterior of the Chateau and the pond. I enjoyed the experience a lot. Oh did I say that the wine was great especially the 10 years old cab?
  • The grounds are absolutely stunning and the wine was phenomenal. However, the service was lackluster. The tasting was rushed and there were no explanations about the wine. We were trying to be upsold the entire time, which is understandable, but it would have been better if some explanations of the wine were provided. It's such a shame, because the wine and the grounds are absolutely beautiful, but don't expect good service or time to enjoy the wine if you plan on going to a tasting.
  • The wine is wonderful. The treatment once doing a testing was less than ideal and very unfriendly. Of all the tours and winery visits we did, this was the worst by far. The staff did not talk about the wines, other than telling you the type of grape and year. The staff should go visit a place like Benziger or Imagery to understand customer service. The new release cab is absolutely delicious. The other wines were spectacular as well. Great Wines. Terrible Service.
