Try the award-winning Chardonnay, along with other delicious wine varieties, at Chateau Montelena. In 1976, the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay won the Paris Tasting and created a lasting reputation for California winemaking. Today you can explore the 103 hectare (254 acre) property, including vineyards originally planted in 1896 by Alfred Loving Tubbs and replanted in 1972. Enjoy a picnic by the Chinese garden and Jade Lake. The winery offers several different tours, including current tastings, limited-release tastings, and vineyard tours, where you'll learn about Napa Valley winemaking and what makes these particular wines worth tasting. Finally, sample the wines made on site. Wines are available for purchase from the wine shop. While the guide was knowledgeable and the grounds were nice, I feel like this wasn't exactly the best fit for a couple of younger girls. A fellow who was part of the tasting group was running late from the bathroom. The guide said, "Oh good, it didn't take you very long to powder your nose." Cue our eye roll. I had eaten a lot just before so I was quietly enjoying my wine in a mild food coma. The guide mentioned I was very quiet. My friend said that I had just eaten a large vegan lunch. The word "vegan" seemed to spark an aggressive amount questions from the group, who were apparently not happy about that lifestyle? I don't care if you eat meat or dairy, it's your choice, but it quickly became uncomfortable with the jokes and my friend apologized for bringing it up, trying to change the topic back to wine. Our guide joined in with the group, rather than redirecting, which just made the rest of the experience really cringey.

The Wineyard itself is beautiful and the staff is friendly. However they don’t let you picnic on their gorgeous grounds unless you are a member and make reservations. Something to keep in mind as they are a bit out of the way and there’s really no place to even sit and eat or do anything unless you purchase their tastings which are a bit pricey.
