Chateau Montelena, Calistoga

4.0
Try the award-winning Chardonnay, along with other delicious wine varieties, at Chateau Montelena. In 1976, the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay won the Paris Tasting and created a lasting reputation for California winemaking. Today you can explore the 103 hectare (254 acre) property, including vineyards originally planted in 1896 by Alfred Loving Tubbs and replanted in 1972. Enjoy a picnic by the Chinese garden and Jade Lake. The winery offers several different tours, including current tastings, limited-release tastings, and vineyard tours, where you'll learn about Napa Valley winemaking and what makes these particular wines worth tasting. Finally, sample the wines made on site. Wines are available for purchase from the wine shop. • I visited this place in may 2018 and was delighted with this Winery and its facilities. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and a small lake. The building is a replica of a chateau. The tasting rooms are elegant and comfortable. Ask for Domenico if you want a really special attention; the will tell les the story of the vineyard that was made into a film in the film Bottle Schock.

  • Has become more and more commercial and sterile as far as the tasting experience goes. I still highly recommend stopping by because the grounds are very well maintained and the structure itself is inc...  more »
  • Loved the grounds, and I had a great host to walk me through the tasting, but without a pre-booked tour, it’s a quick visit. The wine is great, and it was fun to see the “one from the movie”!  more »

  • Absolutely gorgeous vineyard, there is a beautiful Japanese garden with swans and a pond in between the castle and the vineyards. The French style castle is beautiful. The staff were all very pleasant. I rated this a four star because the wine tasting usually is held in a special room with an included experience, but my group and I were put out on a bar with a tender that flitted between people at the bar and left us on our own with minimal descriptions of the wine, the creation process, the palette, etcetera. Paying for the whole wine experience, I don't think it's reasonable to miss out on half of it! The wines were absolutely fantastic and I hope to come back to a more well rounded tasting in the future.
  • Dominico does an excellent job explaining the nuances of the growing process and how it impacts the finished product. Excellent wines, beautiful tour. Well worth the time.
  • This winery was recommended by our innkeeper and several others while we were in town celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. The grounds are gorgeous. There's a lot of steps up to the tasting room but once there we found the staff very cordial and informative. Melissa was awesome. After our regular tasting they shared a taste of the 2005 Estate Cab which was amazing. We left with several of our favorites. We would highly recommend a stop here to enjoy the grounds and the wines.
  • Nice wine tasting and beautiful Chinese garden. I hope they also have something to eat but the lovely swans and cute fishes compensated for the imperfections.
  • This place is aesthetically magical and fun. This is a must if you want to take great pictures and enjoy some decent wine. My experience with the staff was fun and they made great recommendations. I have to admit that this is the place to bring a date and not so much for large groups of friends. It’s more of a romantic place. I have seen other reviews complaining about the customer service here, but my experience was amazing. The employees seem to have a passion for their job and seemed to make good recommendations about the wine.
