Castello di Amorosa, Calistoga

4.1
#1 of 2,030 in Wineries in United States
Sample fine wines and tour a 13th-century Tuscan-style castle at Castello di Amorosa. With a general admission, you explore the first two levels of the castle. Spend extra for the guided tour if you prefer to see more of the grand building. Discover the moat, chapel, drawbridge, and torture chamber, home to a 300-year-old iron maiden torture device. The great hall's frescoes took two Italian artists a year and a half to complete. Climb up one of the defensive towers to take in far-reaching views of the countryside. Once you have finished exploring, descend into tasting rooms to sample wines from the castle's vineyard. To visit Castello di Amorosa on your trip to Calistoga, use our Calistoga trip site .

  • We enjoyed the grounds and had a wonderful time doing the reserve wine tasting. They had such a fantastic variety from whites to reds and dessert wines as well.  more »

  • The place is this medieval castle in Napa Valley. Too crowded and you have to wait a bit to do tasting. The wines I tasted were ok but nothing out of the world. The person who attended us at the tasti...  more »

  • Castle was really awesome. We loved that there were live pigs, peacocks and roosters on the property. The owner did a fantastic job at replicating the Italian Castle. Positives: experience was the best out of all of the wineries. Negatives: most touristy, busy and overpriced. The wine was good but not as good as some of the other ones we had gone to. DD had to pay to enter the castle with us even though he wasn’t driving. Can’t split samples of wine, everyone needs a separate wine tasting pass. Their for sale products are really good (lotions, perfume, wine aerators, etc).
  • Really disappointed. Three girlfriends and I visited this place coming from the east coast. The place was beautiful the wine was great, the service for the MOST part was good except when we got to the wine tasting portion. The man serving the wine, Paolo, was incredibly rude. I’m suspecting he figured we weren’t going to purchase any bottles but little did he know each of us were planning on buying at least three bottles each. Whenever we would try to ask questions, he answered one to two word answers. Then two club members arrived and we had to practically beg to get service. It was unbelievable!! We wanted to love the place but this guy just ruined the experience for us. None of us will be returning, and we have already spread the word to family and friends not to bother going.
  • Great place to visit even with our toddler. It’s a shame we could not do the full tour since our child is less than five years old. Anyways, a great place to visit. The tasting room experience even good for children where they handed us grape juice for our daughter, colors and coloring sheets to distract her while we tasted.
  • An amazing tour with Jade Sparks who was extremely knowledgeable and funny. She has local connections (graduate of the Culinary Institute of America) and really knows how to entertain. During the tour she kept it flowing and had us all listening to the various stories associated with each room. At the end of the tour in our own special room she paired wines with cheese and delighted us with some additional wines that were out of this world. Really a first class, fun and entertaining way to spend the afternoon. She made it special.
  • Beautifully made European-style medieval-era castle (but built only 10-20 years ago!) in the middle of Napa valley. Everything inside is impeccable - the wine tasting room, the furnishing, the decor, the design - and I just wish we could have seen all of its rooms. Heard something about a real medieval era torture chamber in the dungeons! We got the $25 wine tasting ticket which grants you access to a couple of rooms, the chapel and the great hall, along with 5 different types of wine. Makes for a great afternoon adventure!
