Boston Common, Boston
The country's oldest city park, Boston Common dates back to the 1630s. Consisting of 20 hectares (50 acres), the common is part of an extensive chain of parks linked by parkways and waterways. It's named the "Emerald Necklace" because of the way it appears to hang from the "neck" of the Boston peninsula. Pick up a map at the on-site information kiosk to locate notable burial sites within the park, including the graves of painter Gilbert Stuart, composer William Billings, and poet Samuel Sprague. To see the first subway station in America, visit the southern corner of the park. I met Stubby the squirrel who has one angry inch of a tail but he is a very pleasant little ambassador for Boston Common and Beacon Hill. more »
This is such a great family friendly park. Lots of diverse folks hang out there and there is so much space. It's close to shops and restaurants, too! Another cool feature is that there is a playground area for the little ones. Though, be mindful that if you have toddlers it might be a little tough for them to play there because the big kids are having lots of fun there, too. Food trucks, merry go rounds, and tons of space. Go there and have a good time.
I came in mid-March which is probably not the best time of year but it was a nice sunny day and the walk was lovely. Both ponds were dry and the trees were bare but I imagine it would look amazing in the spring and summer. Definitely go by the Visitor Center since they have discounted tickets for various tours and attractions, including the Freedom Trail.
