You'll find mountain views along the banks of the Hudson River; on a clear day the Manhattan skyline is visible on the horizon. You can hike the park's many trails, go on a bicycle or boat ride, fish in the river, or have a picnic. Kids can have fun in the play area, while bird watchers can see different rare and threatened species. The park also features a zoo and a swimming pool. The trail to get to the tower is in great condition. It is not long, but steep, and the whole thing is basically a long set of stone stairs. There are plenty of places to stop and rest along the way and the views from the top are fantastic. I highly recommend going into the tower itself and reading the captions under all the photos on the walls. There is a second trail to the tower that is quite different from the piece of the Appalachian Trail with the steps. I took the alternate route to get down the mountain and it involved a lot of scrambling over steep rocks. Doable if you are in good physical condition, but you'll probably want to stick to the other trail if you have kids.
One of my all time favorite spots from childhood all the way through till adulthood. Beautiful views, nice zoo, and the restaurant in the bear mountain inn is also a great place to check out! Lake is right there with plenty room to walk around and explore. Great place to BBQ in the summer or come enjoy some outdoor family activities
