Islandwood, Bainbridge Island

#6 of 9 in Parks in Bainbridge Island
Nearly two decades ago, founder Debbi Brainerd and her husband Paul created IslandWood from a parcel of land originally slated for development. It was rooted in a belief that the natural world holds the power to educate and inspire not only the way we live, but the way we see. By gaining a new awareness—of nature, ourselves, and one another—we realize our true potential and our ability to chart a course to a better world.

IslandWood has grown from a pilot program serving ten Seattle schools to a nationally recognized organization with multiple locations throughout the Puget Sound region. Our programs and actions seek to integrate relevant, field-based experiential learning into formal education; foster equitable access to learning experiences outside the classroom; increase diversity in the education, science, and environmental fields; and cultivate sustainable cities through education.
