Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, Bainbridge Island

Like the waves of time passing, the sinuous, curving Memorial Wall is built on the historic Eagledale Ferry Dock Landing site where the first of more than 120,000 Japanese Americans were banished from their West Coast homes and placed in concentration camps in WWII.

The 276 foot-long contemplative Memorial Wall of old-growth red cedar, granite and basalt honors the names of all 276 Bainbridge Island Japanese Americans at the start of WWII, and it also honors the unique legacy of a community that stood by their Japanese American friends and neighbors and welcomed them home. Five large terra cotta friezes along the Memorial Wall moving illustrate this American story of perseverance, patriotism and courage.

  • The memorial is set in the woods on the island. The winding path takes you past photos and stories of those individuals who were subjected to cruel action by our government. You will be moved by there...  more »
  • This memorial reminds people of a very difficult time in our country's history and the hardship that the Japanese immigrant residents experienced.  more »

  • A stunning reminder that freedom can be taken away at the pure whim of a people that are afraid. The park is peaceful, stunning really with the craftsmanship of the buildings. Hard to believe what happened to the Japanese Americans here. A absolute must stop and read on our countries history. We as a nation cannot make this mistake ever again...
  • Well worth a visit. I admired all the constructions, Japanese woodwork on a very high level. Just wood pegs that holds the intricate framing together. Also must acknowledge the very nice Park Ranger that gave us a much broader info and answered questions.
