Astoria Column, Astoria

4.6
The 38 m (125 ft) Astoria Column was erected in 1926 as a tribute to the historic events that shaped Oregon and its surrounding states. Sgraffito (scratched) artwork winds around the column and focuses on three historic events: Captain Robert Gray's discovery of the Columbia River, the conclusion of the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the arrival of the Tonquin ship. Climb the column's 164-step spiral staircase to take in the views of the Oregon Coast Range, Young's Bay, the Columbia River, and, on clear days, the Pacific Ocean. Those who can't manage the stairs can still enjoy impressive views from the column's base. Bring a picnic along to enjoy the on the lawn.
