Mesa Falls, Ashton

#5 of 80 in Nature in Idaho
Upper Mesa Falls is a waterfall on the Henrys Fork in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Upstream from Lower Mesa Falls, it is roughly 16mi away from Ashton, Idaho.Upper Mesa Falls is roughly 114ft high and 200ft wide.FormationMesa Falls Tuff, which is the rock over which Upper Mesa Falls cascades, was formed 1.3 million years ago. A cycle of rhyolitic volcanism from the Henrys Fork caldera deposited a thick layer of rock and ash across the area. This layer compressed and hardened over time.Between 200,000 and 600,000 years ago, the river eroded a wide canyon which was subsequently partly filled with basalt lava flows. The Henrys Fork of the Snake River then carved the channel through the basalt; which is the inner canyon seen today.

  • Great stop on the way from West Yellowstone to Jackson. So glad we did it - well worth the $5. Bring the bug spray! When you leave, if you’re headed to Jackson, WY don’t forget to stop at the Lower Fa...  more »
  • These falls were gorgeous and easily accessible! We were able to get very close and saw a rainbow. Highly recommend to anyone in the area! Short hike to lower falls as well but not as impressive.  more »
  • We were traveling through from Bear Lake to Montana. We had a large group with teens down to babies. We parked in overflow parking at the upper Mesa falls. There is a pay station there for a $5 day fe...  more »

  • The last place my grandfather visited. Means everything to me. An amazing place to visit and see sheer awesomeness. Try and visit when it's not high tourism season. That way you can actually enjoy it.
  • Mesa Falls, upper and lower, are sooo beautiful! I would highly recommend seeing them if you are in the vicinity of eastern Idaho. I visited the falls approximately five years ago when I visited Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It was a beautiful drive over from Jackson Hole through the gorgeous state of Idaho. I would love to go back one day!
  • Amazing too see! Such a large river coming off the falls. Normally there is a visiting fee of a couple dollars, but we went in October and they don't charge fees during to off season.
  • Amazing and beautiful, I partook on a great hike here. Bring a camera because this place is chock full of beauty. This is a great in between spot before you hit Yellowstone, so make sure you get finally prepared in this part of the state if you're ready to get wild. Thank you Idaho, for your beautiful waterfalls
  • Love this place. Don't miss out on hiking to the lower. It is just as beautiful if not more.
