Mesa Falls, Ashton

#5 of 94 in Nature in Idaho
Upper Mesa Falls is a waterfall on the Henrys Fork in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Upstream from Lower Mesa Falls, it is roughly 16mi away from Ashton, Idaho.Upper Mesa Falls is roughly 114ft high and 200ft wide.FormationMesa Falls Tuff, which is the rock over which Upper Mesa Falls cascades, was formed 1.3 million years ago. A cycle of rhyolitic volcanism from the Henrys Fork caldera deposited a thick layer of rock and ash across the area. This layer compressed and hardened over time.Between 200,000 and 600,000 years ago, the river eroded a wide canyon which was subsequently partly filled with basalt lava flows. The Henrys Fork of the Snake River then carved the channel through the basalt; which is the inner canyon seen today.

  • Well worth the detour from Rt 20 and the small hike from the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway to visit the Upper Mesa Falls. The lower falls are a much longer hike, so check this out first. Lovely rainbow seen from observation point around mid-morning. Not sure if that can be seen later during the day.
  • The falls are amazing! There is a great boardwalk and stair set that takes you on a loop to upper falls and back to the visitor center. The visitor center is informative and the employees are friendly and eager to educate everyone. We were there on a Saturday and volunteers were giving a watershed demonstration that was really neat. The small animal collection inside was a favorite of my kids as well.
