Mesa Falls, Ashton

#6 of 54 in Nature in Idaho
Upper Mesa Falls is a waterfall on the Henrys Fork in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Upstream from Lower Mesa Falls, it is roughly 16mi away from Ashton, Idaho.Upper Mesa Falls is roughly 114ft high and 200ft wide.FormationMesa Falls Tuff, which is the rock over which Upper Mesa Falls cascades, was formed 1.3 million years ago. A cycle of rhyolitic volcanism from the Henrys Fork caldera deposited a thick layer of rock and ash across the area. This layer compressed and hardened over time.Between 200,000 and 600,000 years ago, the river eroded a wide canyon which was subsequently partly filled with basalt lava flows. The Henrys Fork of the Snake River then carved the channel through the basalt; which is the inner canyon seen today.

  • This is a beautiful water fall and it is combined with a scenic route. Whether you are on your way to or from Island Park, it is a fairly quick stop if you plan ahead. Keep in mind that you may need t...  more »
  • unwise beautiful waterfalls, very quiet! beautiful walks and with a 3 minute Boardwalk you are literally next to the waterfall. most people come this way on the way to west Yellowstone but save this place definitely not on!

  • I find more. A rather long journey, was a road almost obliged but even though we had an alternative we chose this because precisely imagined to find more. We arrived at Upper Falls where you pay an entrance ticket but we sought directions, the ranger was not found, and we haven't found (in particular wanted to understand what was interesting and if the ticket, we could pay cash with self, you had to pay just to enter the camp or even to see the falls; not having found indications we checked out. We arrived at the Lower Falls, no campground and no ticket, and we could admire the waterfalls and a beautiful panorama. Too little for the long road ahead.

  • Amazing too see! Such a large river coming off the falls. Normally there is a visiting fee of a couple dollars, but we went in October and they don't charge fees during to off season.
  • Amazing and beautiful, I partook on a great hike here. Bring a camera because this place is chock full of beauty. This is a great in between spot before you hit Yellowstone, so make sure you get finally prepared in this part of the state if you're ready to get wild. Thank you Idaho, for your beautiful waterfalls
  • Love this place. Don't miss out on hiking to the lower. It is just as beautiful if not more.
  • This place is awesome. It cost five bucks a carload to get in which is totally fine and cheap. You did kind of have to wait in line with the cars as there's not a lot of parking. They were letting cars in as cars were leaving so there would be a place for people to park. You don't have to walk very far to see The Falls it's a great experience everybody should check this out it's very enjoyable and really cool natural phenomenon. It's pretty long walk if you want to go to the lower Falls but you can see it from almost a half mile away it's really cool.
  • Stunning views up close to the falls and beautiful scenery.
