Alta Ski Area, Alta

#4 of 25 in Winter Sports in Utah
One of the country's oldest vacation destinations, Alta Ski Area challenges powder hounds with demanding slopes for alpine skiing. Opened in the 1930s, the resort features over 100 ski runs spread over nearly 900 hectares (2,000 acres) of skiable area. The resort's terrain provides skiing opportunities for all skill levels, with more than half of its total area suitable for beginner and intermediate skiers. Offering much more than just light powder and steep slopes, the resort also provides year-round climbing and backcountry guided adventures. Check the road conditions before you set off for the resort, and visit the website for updated lift and run closings. A visit to Alta Ski Area represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Alta travel site to plot your vacation.

  • Amazing slopes and runs. Just a fantastic place. And the gates at 10,500 into Snowbird will double your fun. Small compared to "mega" resorts, but the terrain and beauty and fun are awesome!  more »

  • Great place to ski. Anyone that tells you it makes no difference if snowboards are allowed, has never skied a run with out them. It makes for an amazing ski experience. Add to that the real ski feeling, not just some other resort taking all they can when they can, Alta is the real deal if your a fan of skiing. This is by far one of the most enjoyable large ski hills I have been to. The prices seem fair for everything from the lift tickets to food and merchandise. I highly suggest you give Alta a try!
  • Great terrain for experienced skiers. Both Alta and Snowbird (which is right next door) have a great combinations of verticals and powdery snow. I really enjoyed the variation of terrain at Alta - nice combo of fast groomers, tranquil tree skiing, moguls, and chutes and bowls. I would not consider this a good place for newbies or even intermediate skiers. I would say advanced levels will enjoy this the best.
