Nothe Fort, Weymouth

4.6
#1 of 7 in Historic Sites in Weymouth
Once an important stronghold in World War II, Nothe Fort remains one of the most well-preserved forts in England. Spread over three levels, the museum houses standing exhibitions of Weymouth’s naval history and of World War II. Wander to the top level and out to the surrounding gardens for views of Portland Harbor and the Jurassic Coast. Parking is available, although the fort is only a 15-minute walk from the town center. Take a rowboat from the harbor to the fort for a chance to explore the nearby beaches and enjoy views from the water. • The Fort itself was closed when I visited but the gardens and the views were worth the visit. There are plenty of signs provided history of the place and I would go back to visit the Fort itself  more »
  • Walked via the harbour side and up the hill and steps from Weymouth to find that it was closed. We did not realise that it was an enclosed gated space with entry fee. Well we do now. (They could have....  more »

  • The restoration of the Nothe Fort is really well done. All staff were polite and accommodating. There is a coffee shop inside and picnic tables dotted around if you take your own. Don't forget to go down into the bowels of the fort to see many static exhibitions. The prices are reasonable and if offer still on you can have a yearly pass for the price of a day ticket. Lovely day out, will revisit.
  • Visited a couple of weeks ago with my family. Fascinating place. The exhibits are interesting, and exploring all the corridors within the thick fort walls is an unforgettable experience. The kids absolutely loved it. The activity for children - find as many mice as you can - kept them occupied, and encouraged them to explore the displays and exhibits. Staff were helpful and friendly. Facilities were clean. It's surprising how much is contained within the fort, so allow a full morning or afternoon to explore it all.
