Castell Coch, Tongwynlais

4.5
William Burges' architectural magnum opus, Castell Coch, or Red Castle, is a dream world built by a patron and his favorite architect. Tour the rooms and take note of the ornate detail, vibrant color, and gilded workmanship that came to define the Victorian age. The castle was only lived in briefly by Lady Margaret Crichton-Stuart and, as such, has kept most of the original design intact. A visit to Castell Coch represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Cardiff driving holiday planner to plot your vacation.

  • A real fairy tale castle with a stunning interior which is well worth a visit. We listened to the audio tour which was informative and easy to use. Most of the rooms are accessible only via narrow stairways so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.
  • Very interesting castle which looks small when you walk in but has lots of interesting rooms, some of which are stunning. The audio guides are helpful at bringing the place to life. £7.50 each to get in. Spent about two hours there. Roads are narrow and steep on the way to the castle. Tea Room is far too hot but served great food.
