Must see · Scenic Walking Area · Garden
Discover the world-famous Stourhead House and Garden, described as a "living work of art" when it first opened in the 1740s. This sprawling estate, covering over 1,000 hectares (2,600 acres), shelters a variety of native wildlife and includes a Palladian mansion, farmland, woodland, and a renowned garden. Inspired by the paintings representing Utopian-style views of Italian landscapes, the garden was laid out around a large artificial lake. A number of temples are spread throughout the garden, including the temple of Apollo, which provides an ideal vantage point for surveying the estate’s large collection of trees, shrubs, and flowers from around the world. Drop by for a leisurely family picnic, or choose from a number of different tours and guided walks around the estate.
