Trip Planner: Europe / UK / England / Cornwall / St Austell / Pentewan / The Lost Gardens of Heligan
One of the UK’s best-known botanical gardens, The Lost Gardens of Heligan include aged and colossal rhododendrons and camellias, a series of lakes fed by a ram pump over a century old, highly productive flower and vegetable gardens, and a wild area filled with subtropical ferns. The gardens also contain Europe’s only remaining pineapple pit, an old method of growing this tropical fruit in colder climates. This area shelters a diverse native wildlife in a number of different habitats, such as hay meadows, grazed pastures, wetlands, and ancient woodlands. Start your visit at the site’s shop and plant center, where you can pick up a guidebook, walking stick, camera batteries, writing materials, and outdoor clothing. The Lost Gardens of Heligan Reviews
I came here on a trip by myself with three children aged 5-11. It was pouring for the first hour and a half but we still had a great time exploring. There is so much to see and do for both grown ups..... more »
Amazing place - felt like walking through the lost jungle, you really can get submerged and feel like you are in a tropical paradise. This was our second visit and we enjoyed it as much as the first..... more »
My family and I (parents, one adult child and two teenagers) had a great day out at Heligan with our dog in August. The gardens and jungle (my favourite bit) were varied, interesting and well laid out. There is plenty of variety and considering how long we were kept entertained for it was pretty good value for money on a family ticket. The flower meadow was absolutely spectacular and we must have chanced upon the best week of the year to see it judging by the astonishing number of flowers. The queue for the rope bridge was fairly painful (about 30 minutes) and none of the rest of the family could be bothered. Dogs are not allowed on the bridge under any circumstances. The length of the queue is simply a result of its popularity though and no-one made me wait. I enjoyed it when my turn finally came. The only negative aspect of our visit was the rather mediocre cream tea that we had at the Steward's House. A cup of very ordinary tea in a paper cup is no substitute for a pot of tea and some extra hot water. The scones were nothing to write home about and considering its ordinariness, the cream tea was over-priced. That said, we all really enjoyed the day and I have every intention of returning.
We absolutely loved it here. Staff were fantastic and the place is stunning. My 5yo loved the tree stumps area where they can climb and play. Gorgeous place and we will certainly go back again. Loved how a silver bracelet I dropped was returned to a member of staff and then handed back to reception. That was a lovely surprise to get it back.
