Built in the 12th century and still holding services, Norwich Cathedral is one of 12 heritage sites in the area. Enter the cathedral through one of the two historic gates: the Ethelbert gate or the original gated entrance. Inside, you'll see 61 misericords, small wooden shelves also known as "mercy seats," carved on the underside of the folding chairs. Several hundred of the over 1,000 bosses (raised ornamental decorations) are carved and painted with ornate delicacy. A free guided tour will fill you in on the highlights. Tours are given daily, so there is no need to book ahead. The cathedral is an important cultural meeting place, with regular exhibits in the Hostry Visitor and Education Center and live music at the refectory. Norwich Cathedral Reviews
Amazing cathedral, you could spend the whole day walking round it and find new things to see each time. Wheelchair accessible in most places which is great as I have a disable sister, have nice large and modern cafe, and best of all the cathedral is free to enter although they do ask for a donation. And at the moment they have a cat who practically lives there which I thought was unique.
Having lived in Norwich for many years, I've always thought of it as my Cathedral. It's welcoming, beautiful and, as far as I know, free to get in. But, of course, you can put in a donation or make use of the refectory for coffee and cake. Look inside at the amazing roof, or outside, the second highest spire in the country. The cloisters are nice to walk around too. Inside, also, look out for a humorous sixteenth (?) century poem on the right hand side as you walk up towards the altar. The stained glass windows are lovely. The font at the back of the cathedral was once used for making chocolate at the now closed Rowntree Mackintosh factory.
