Crofton Beam Engines, Marlborough

#1 of 7 in Historic Sites in Marlborough
Situated in the Wiltshire countryside 6 miles from the picturesque market town of Marlborough, this Grade 1 listed building houses two magnificent Cornish beam engines, one of which (the 1812 Boulton and Watt) is the oldest working beam engine in the world still in its original engine house and capable of actually doing the job for which it was installed.

The fantastic Engineman's Rest Cafe is a splendid place to enjoy light lunches, home made cakes, and ice creams, alongside a selection of canal souvenirs in the shop.

  • Really interesting visit and it's so amazing to see a beam engine still doing its job after over 200 years. Really worth going. Cafe was good too.
  • Wonderful to see the oldest working beam engine in the world still doing its job and pumping 200 gallons every stroke up to the K&A summit. Learned a lot about both the engines from the very enthusiastic volunteers. Excellent attraction.
