Founded in 1837 , the cemetery was laid out in a garden or pleasure ground style to the design of Sir William Tite.
It soon became the most fashionable cemetery in South London and was known as the “Millionaire’s Cemetery” because of the number and quality of the memorials and mausolea, a significant number of which are Listed.
Norwood Cemetery was the second of London’s ‘magnificent seven’ extra-mural cemeteries and was the first in the world built entirely in the Gothic style.
Located in a densely populated part of the borough that lacks greenspaces, it offers a vast, peaceful resource that needs to be conserved.
West Norwood Cemetery has been awarded a Green Flag Award, recognising the hard work and joint effort of both community and council to restore this unique heritage and ecological asset for all to appreciate.
West Norwood Crematorium, founded in 1915 is placed in the centre of the cemetery and offers cremation and memorial services to all, and is an important aspect of the site.

One of the Magnificent Seven Victorian cemeteries of London. Good for a funeral or for a walk. But if you are walking to the chapel and Crematorium be aware that it is a 10-15 minute walk from the entrance.
On the Open House Weekend this is definitely worth a visit, particularly the Greek Corner.
