Tower Bridge, London

4.7
#5 of 3,379 in Things to do in London
Only a handful of bridges around the world have achieved iconic status, and Tower Bridge is one of them. Judging by its name and appearance, you might think the bridge is an original part of the adjacent Tower of London. Its construction, however, was completed in 1894, centuries after the fortress. Head into one tower and up to the walkway 42 m (138 ft) above the River Thames to reach the other tower. You'll have a panoramic view of the city along the way. Stop by the exhibit in the east walkway to watch a video about the bridge's construction, and to see a gallery of photos of 20 significant bridges around the world. Head into the Victorian engine rooms, where you can experience a recreation of the motor-based operation of the bridge at the time of its inauguration and view a virtual bridge-lift. If your visit to the area will be near dusk, stop to see the bridge lit up. Plan my London trip by asking Inpirock to come up with tips and suggestions.

  • Iconic piece of London. Set alongside the ancient Tower of London & the well redeveloped St Katherines Dock. Beautiful Victorian architecture and piece of engineering. Most of the workings are still the original although the power source is more modern. Nothing quite like it anywhere else in the world. Still a functioning lifting bridge & spectacular to see IF you are fortunate to witness one of the 50 or so occasions per year it occurs these days compared with the hundreds per year in bygone times when London's Docks extended into the heart of the city.
  • I have been wanting to do the Tower Bridge Experience for a while and was lucky enough to have the opportunity whilst in London last week. We decided to walk up the stairs to the viewing platform and were so glad we did as we could then really appreciate the fantastic engineering which took place to build this structure. The views from the top across the city are stunning as always on a sunny day. The exhibitions within the bridge are informative and the glass floor is a bonus addition. Well worth a visit.
  • Plenty of stairs to climb but the lift is roomy and fast and there's seating available if you want to rest for a while. The staff are friendly, helpful and informative. The views of the city are spectacular. See if you can walk across the glass floor without stumbling, it's not as easy as you might think.
  • I really loved the Tower Bridge. It is very pretty and the views from the top are great. The Thames is little on the brown side, so it is not specially beautiful, but the architecture of the Tower Bridge and the glass way, was really a great experience. I advise everyone that goes to London to go here.
  • It felt surreal to be standing on such a famous bridge that you always see in pictures. It's busy and there's a lot of traffic so pay attention where you are going. If you want to take pictures step to the side, don't just stop in the middle of the sidewalk please. Most importantly, put down the phone and take in the view. There is no better camera than your own eyes.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
