Tower Bridge, London

4.6
#5 of 2,151 in Things to do in London
Only a handful of bridges around the world have achieved iconic status, and Tower Bridge is one of them. Judging by its name and appearance, you might think the bridge is an original part of the adjacent Tower of London. Its construction, however, was completed in 1894, centuries after the fortress. Head into one tower and up to the walkway 42 m (138 ft) above the River Thames to reach the other tower. You'll have a panoramic view of the city along the way. Stop by the exhibit in the east walkway to watch a video about the bridge's construction, and to see a gallery of photos of 20 significant bridges around the world. Head into the Victorian engine rooms, where you can experience a recreation of the motor-based operation of the bridge at the time of its inauguration and view a virtual bridge-lift. If your visit to the area will be near dusk, stop to see the bridge lit up. Put Tower Bridge into our London itinerary planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in London.

  • I came here with my girlfriend while I was visiting London. Even though it was raining heavily when we got there, we were able to get under one of the towers to enjoy the view. It was very chill and relaxing.
  • Tower Bridge is my favourite bridge of all the bridges. It is a very picturesque bridge. Also Tower Bridge still lifts up, on some days several times. Bridge lift times can be checked online so that you can time your visit to witness this amazing phenomenon! Many tourists confuse this bridge with London Bridge! No the bridge that opens up is called Tower Bridge!
  • Landmark and major sight of London. Usually very crowded throughout the year. There are many different ways to enjoy and explore this bridge. Nice photo opportunities from either side of the river. You can take the tour inside the bridge which is quite interesting and its price is reasonable. Or alternatively, you might take a boat to see the bridge from underneath. Don't forget to check the bridge lift times (it is opened up a few times every day) on their website and then you can see this historic bridge being opened up as well.
  • The experience is very enriching. They show you a mini movie on the construction of the bridge and show you the machine room below. And being able to look down at the road from that glass section in the bridge is kind of exciting.
  • Fantastic historical site. Helpful and informative staff. Access for wheelchair users is limited but staff do their best to accommodate where possible. Direct entry to Crown jewels and the basement of the White tower is arranged via a Beefeater.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
