St. James's Park, London

4.7
#2 of 2,700 in Parks in England
St. James's Park is one of the most pleasurable green spaces in London. The oldest of the city's royal parks, it offers 23 hectares (57 acres) of lawns, trees, and playgrounds around a pond. Take a stroll down the queen's ceremonial route from Buckingham Palace, spot the palace and the London Eye from the Blue Bridge, and enjoy a waterside meal at Inn the Park while spotting ducks, geese, swans, and even pelicans. While in the park, keep an eye out for some of the plaques along the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk. This 11 km (7 mi) route past buildings and locations related to the princess goes through this park, as well as Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens. Beautiful park full of wildlife and character. Walking through and up to the palace is a lovely way to spend time as a family or even as a solo outing  more »

It's my umpteenth visit to St James's Park. The care of the Park, walks by Lady d., a view of Buckingham Palace on the West side of the Lake and the Shell Tower and the London Eye to the East, making it one of the most suggestive places in London. A must to go, walking between flowers, squirrels, ducks, geese and other amazing animals, to visit Her Majesty and to admire from near Buckingham Palace.

  • The lush green gardens, the wildlife .. I mean ducks and other birds.. friendly squirrels are a pleasure to see and play with. Great photo opportunity. This is the Royal gardens, just off Buckingham palace. We generally sit down and have a picnic here with the best views of London. If you are lucky, you will also get to see flamingo's here. There are a couple of food stalls where you get some food and drink. Trafalgar Square is just 5 mins walk from here. Central location.
  • Absolutely amazing, great place to relax and unwind - I went with a friend and wandered around the park and it was a great pleasure. Beautiful greenery and wildlife. There is something truly amazing about London in the summertime - recommend everyone visits St James's Park.
  • Lovely big park to walk around. Very central. Lake is great. Plenty of space to sit out in the sun on a nice summer's day. Not tried the cafe so can't comment on that.
  • This park located in central London is a sight of beauty, the flowers and we'll kept gardens builds an enjoyable walk in the park at ones leisure. I love the cafe there, the staff are great and the little playground for the kids is wonderful
  • Lovely large central London park with a lake, pelicans, cafe and restrooms. Generally more busy than Green Park, for the views across the lake to Buckingham Palace and connection to Westminster Square, but perfectly bearable. For a great view of Buckingham Palace and the London Eye, head to the lake bridge toward the middle of the park.

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
