Oxleas Wood, London

#11 of 25 in Wildlife in London
Park · Hidden Gem · Wildlife Area
Oxleas Wood is one of the few remaining areas of ancient deciduous forest in Eltham in the Royal Borough of Greenwich (with a small amount passing over the boundary into the London Borough of Bexley), in southeast London. Some parts date back over 8,000 years to the end of the last Ice Age, the Younger Dryas. It is part of a larger continuous area of woodland and parkland on the south side of Shooter's Hill: other parts are Jack Wood, Castle Wood, Oxleas Meadows, Falconwood Field, Eltham Common and Eltham Park North (the latter being divided by the A2 main road from its southern section). Eltham Park North includes the ancient Shepherdleas Wood. It is also home to Severndroog Castle.

  • Absolutely fantastic, great woodland area with a fabulous meadow. The Severndroog Castle offers an amazing view of London and the cafe on top of the main heath is lovely with even some live entertainment on a Sunday. Really a perfect getaway not far out of the city. In fact, forget I said anything, prefer to keep it a bit tucked away and not at all crowded.
  • Lovely well shaded wood (good thick canopy) great for a walk with the children or the dog when the sun's blazing. Please be mindful of the busy road (welling way) when out with the little ones or the dog. It comes up suddenly if you haven't quiet got your bearings. Also noticed some signage about knotweed and how it can irritate skin but this area was taped off and signs clearly visible. Enjoy :)
