Houses of Parliament, London

4.6
#5 of 144 in Historic Sites in London
See British democracy in action at Houses of Parliament. During the week, all British residents and overseas visitors can watch legislators debating for free. If your visit falls on a Saturday, or during the summer recess, you'll be able to take a guided tour of the building. The tours are comprehensive, starting in the Queen’s Robing Room, moving through chambers for debating and voting, and finishing in medieval Westminster Hall. Along the way, you'll encounter grandly appointed spaces and collect knowledge about British parliamentary procedure. UK residents can also tour Elizabeth Tower, but foreign visitors cannot. Plan your visit to Houses of Parliament and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our London itinerary builder.

Like everything in London, very expensive. But it is worthwhile to see the Parliament. The visit includes audioguide in Spanish, to find out what you're seeing. Impressive to be within the British Parliament.

  • Visited with the local youth council during the Easter holidays. It was very easy to get to the building, but finding the entrance wasn't the clearest, although this is understandable, as it is a very high security building. Once inside, it was very easy to work out where we needed to be. All the tours seemed to be running on time, so our tour started at the time that we expected. A very efficient process. We were shown around and told about the history of the building by our tour guide, Peter Clark. He was very knowledgeable about the building and British politics. Any questions that were asked, he knew the answer to. He also had a great sense of humour and appeared to be great with the younger children. Overall, it was an amazing visit and I would suggest it to anyone who is able to gain entry. The best way is contacting your local MP, who may be able to give you tickets free of charge.
  • Had a family tour and we all enjoyed it, children have an audioguide with stories and quizzes. The whole route is enjoyable with beautiful interiors. The cafe is great.
  • Avery impressive location. You can even stay and listen to some debates in one of the houses. You never know what they will be taking about (probably bore you to sleep but you never know).
  • Went here a few years ago, a sombrely vile day. Threw up , got lost , got yelled at for taking a single photo with a blackberry yet several other people were taking photos as if it was some sort of crime scene , my pen exploded in my pocket , almost passed out and to top it off the most notable individual we saw at the time was none other than the then Home Secretary Teresa may. Vile.
  • I really enjoyed going here, I went on a tour of the building, the tour guides are very helpful but I'll recommend going whilst the politicians are not in recess because it's a lot more entertaining!

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
