Buckingham Palace, London

4.1
#3 of 2,700 in Parks in England
Buckingham Palace serves as a splendid reminder of the monarch's continued importance in British culture. If you visit during August or September, you'll have the opportunity to tour the palace's opulent staterooms. The queen receives and entertains guests and conducts special ceremonies in these spaces. Many of the furnishings date back to the 1830s, when King George IV transformed Buckingham House into a palace. On your tour, you'll learn how the monarch uses each of the 19 staterooms, hear colorful history relating to these spaces, and see numerous works in the British royals' art collection. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, because the tour lasts from 2-2.5 hours and stretches out over 0.8 km (0.5 miles). Photography is not permitted inside. If you visit outside of August and September, you can still watch the changing of the guard outside the palace. • Worth going for a quick visit, but just not much to see outside the gate. The palace does not look exactly like a palace, and I guess most people just take a few photos and go. Some do enjoy time on the pasture outside the gate, like how you enjoy any park. The change of guards is the highlight but you have to check when it would take place.
  • Went last year... Amazing.. A superb day.. The architecture and decor was beautiful.. Staff were amazing.. Even gave me a mobile seat as have problems walking and standing up for to long.. One of the best days out in London.. And I hope regular.. Will most definitely go again.
  • We're such idiots!. My husband and I came here on a Saturday morning to sight-see, watch the changing of the guard, etc. It was really great, but at first we kept wondering why, in early-May, it was so dang crowded. DUH - we came on May 2, 2015 - and Charlotte of Cambridge had just been born that morning. Thousands of people were crowding the square. It was confusing at first, then awesome when we realized what was going on. We'll definitely have to make a trip back on a less crowded day, but we did get to see the changing of the guard and lots of other highlights. It's a beautiful place.
  • The changing of the guard is rather entertaining but you are looking at spending at least 3 hours of your day to fully enjoy the show. If you are short of time other activities may be a better choice. If you are going bring some water with you, especially on sunny days. The best spots are towards the gates.
  • Great site seeing you must see. Visit during summer in order to be able to enter the palace. Otherwise you only can see the palace from outside and see gaurds changing

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
