British Museum, London

4.7
See the development of human culture on every continent from prehistory to the present at British Museum. The museum houses one of the largest collections of works in the world, some 8 million. You'll encounter many significant items here, including the Rosetta Stone, the Magna Carta, and the Parthenon Frieze. The museum is broken into various departments, each covering a specific place and time, such as ancient Egypt and Sudan, or a theme, such as coins and medals. The works cover a broad spectrum of styles, from ancient carvings, sculptures, stoneware, and gold metalwork to prints and drawings from famous Renaissance artists. You won't have time to cover all the museum's collections in a single visit, so you should choose subjects that interest you and focus on them. A map of the museum helps you navigate efficiently. Pick up a copy at an information point inside, or download a digital one to your smartphone or tablet ahead of time. If you're not sure which galleries to visit, you can join a highlights tour. Departing twice a day every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, these guided tours show you the museum's most important pieces. Book this tour online or at the information desk in the front court. If specific galleries interest you, try to catch one of the free daily Eye-Opener tours. Galleries host one of these 30- to 40-minute tours per day, giving you a deeper historical understanding of specific periods and regions. • It is pretty good in my opinion. It has collections of the best in the world. It's free and convenient. Don't miss the part devoted to Egypt and Greece. It needs time to see in dark conditions.

  • So OK we paid a £5 donation and had to queue for 15 minutes but it is so worth it. Astonishingly superb and unique exhibits with multi-language audio tours. You could easily spend all day there and on...  more »
  • Amazing place. We went 3 times! Highly recommended! There are days that can't be people and you've got half an hour of tail, other days you enter very fast.

  • The museum is huge and full of interesting exhibitions. There are fixed ones and some that are specially curated for a specific period of time, and it is definitely worth exploring. There is also a good selection of souvenirs in the shops on the ground floor if you feel like taking a bit of history home. And also a nice restaurant for an afternoon tea or lunch. Would definitely recommend going at least once! ⛲🏫📷
  • Ideally, I'd give it a 4.6. Huge, well curated museum. Has TONS of stuff from all around the world and all across time, including the Rosetta stone. Must see if you're in London. The ONLY reason i don't give it a five star review is the cost. Everything in London is expensive (it's an alpha++ global city after all) but, in addition to the cost, there are donating bins EVERYWHERE, to the point of almost being bothersome. Kind of took away from it. Also, very crowded, even on weekdays, but that's to be expected as well. But it's genuinely gorgeous, and the only museum i can think of that remotely rivals it is the Smithsonian... and I'd say the British is probably more extensive.
  • British Museum was awesome part of our visit to London. Been wanting to visit it since childhood and see a lot of historically famous items. Even if it was really great visit it didn't live up to the hype I had created for myself and I expected it to be a bit different experience, especially how exhibitions were laid out and presented. Building is also very maze like and difficult to navigate, especially if you have some trouble moving around.
  • Great "free" museum. They do ask for a specific donation at the door and there are please donate boxes everywhere. Charge for map of museum. I almost wish it was just a small fee to get in. The content was awesome. Lots for kids and grown ups of all ages and nice gift shop and food options.
  • A massive museum with multiple floors, and exhibitions so big it could take days to fully explore! Best of all, the entry is completely free! + Free entry. + Great historic displays from all parts of the world. + Guided tours available. + Dining area with okay food if you want to grab a quick bite. - Tends to be a bit crowded. - Only one restroom facility with extremely long lines. If you're in the area it's definitely worth stopping by to see if there's any displays that peak your interest. If you're planning to visit ahead of time and want to see as much as possible, be prepared to set aside a couple of hours at the very minimum. Definitely recommended!

Where to stay in London

Many of London's main attractions are spread out, so nearby public transportation is key. There is no downtown area as such in London, and some of the least expensive hotels have more convenient access to tourist sites than the costlier ones. For a quintessential London experience, consider staying in the West End. This part of town offers excellent theaters, historical sites, and eating and shopping options for every taste. Lodging won’t be cheap, but you’ll have the colorful variety of London life right at your doorstep. Look at Notting Hill or Chelsea for charming and less expensive boutique hotels and B&Bs.
