Eilean Donan Castle
An icon of the western Highlands, Eilean Donan Castle rests on a tidal island in Loch Duich. Before walking over the footbridge to tour the castle ruins, take a stroll to the south for a stunning view of the ruins with the loch beneath and the sky in the background. The restored castle has a keep deep within its walls that is open to the public along with the rest of the grounds. In 2001, the island had a population of one; since 2011, there are no permanent residents living there, so it is exclusively a tourist site. Castle full of charm, you can see very well already from the parking lot. We were at the beginning of November, the weather was lenient, some clouds and wind. Inside it is not possible to bring backpacks, mine I had to bring it back in the car (because I did not find a wardrobe or boxes to store it at the ticket office or the entrance). The ticket price includes the audio guide (also in Italian). You enter through a small door and enter the inner courtyard, then the rooms all furnished (the interior is quite small because the walls are four meters thick). To welcome some of the dressed in typical Scottish dress (I do not know if guarding the castle or to give information to those who need it, in any case typical "Scottish" sin not to have been able to photograre them - photos are forbidden in all rooms), In the rooms are exposed various photographs of the family that still owns (the McRea) and who lived there until the 70s. Also interesting is the kitchen area. I would recommend the visit, the landscape around it is really charming.View original -
This is the most photpgraphed castle in Scotland and I normally avoid things that are luaded as "the best" because I am often let down. But the setting of this castle is beautiful and the walk across ... more »

A castle with a rich history, and showings in memorable Hollywood films. However, due to the tide (which we did not know about) the surrounding water had left at our time of visit, making it a poor spectacle as you can see in the photo. Inside the space is rather limited and nothing special to see. We enjoyed however the two talks from the castle guides.

One of Scotland's most famously photographed castles. Picturesque even on a Rainy Day! Restaurant very disappointing and expensive! £9.75 for the Steak pie (pictured) and "veg" but NO gravy, even when I asked for some, restaurant staff not the most helpful! "If its not out, then there is none". Should have gone for the baked potato!! Note, you are NOT allowed to consume your own drinks in the restaurant! Castle audio guide is very good, room access good, and guides on hand to answer questions. Gift shop is well stocked and reasonably priced. No photography allowed in the castle.
