Thursford evolved from George Cushing's personal collection of antiques and knick-knacks into a working museum. The site boasts a large collection of mechanical organs, Europe's fourth largest Wurlitzer with 1,339 pipes, and a 19th-century gondola merry-go-round, among other quirky antiques. If in the area during the Christmas season, attend the Christmas Spectacular, the largest and most popular Christmas show in Britain. Make sure you book ahead due to the show's popularity. Behind-the-scenes tours run daily, giving insight into the famous show by showing the costume stores, "Fantasy Land," and the engine yard. Although public transport options exist, driving to the museum makes for a less complicated journey. • This is a must see spectacular show. Highly talented singers, dancers and musicians. A fabulous winter wonderland with a variety of shops selling Christmas novelty items.

  • My first visit and wasn't disappointed. I felt as though I had been transported somewhere very magical. I can't wait to go back again when it has been transformed for Christmas.
  • We decided to visit Thursford as we often go to Steam Fairs. We live in the Southwest so decided to have a two night stopover at Fakenham close to Thursford. It cost us £198 but it was a lovely hotel close by. We arrived at Thursford and waited for the museum to open. We paid £6.50 each and also asked if we could pay for the Behind The Scenes Tour at £3.50 each but were told there were coaches arriving that day and this option wasn’t available! So, we wandered in to the main hall to see the exhibits. Yes there were mechanical organs and steam engines but we saw it all in no more than 15 minutes. The only thing then would be to stand around and wait until 11:30 for the Mechanical organ to start playing and after that it was an hour until the carousel rides were opened at an extra charge of £2 per person! We decided to have a cup of tea and a scone in the cafe, had a quick look in a couple of the shops and left within 1hr of our arrival! The whole experience was very disappointing. It cost us £13 to get in on top of the diesel to travel there from the Southwest and the hotel costs. Really wish we hadn’t bothered. In future we will stick to our steam fairs in Devon and Cornwall where you can see these engines working as they used to back in the day and have a fabulous day out for no more than £20 in total.
