Imperial War Museum Duxford is a branch of the Imperial War Museum near Duxford in Cambridgeshire, England. Britain's largest aviation museum, Duxford houses the museum's large exhibits, including nearly 200 aircraft, military vehicles, artillery and minor naval vessels in seven main exhibition buildings. The site also provides storage space for the museum's other collections of material such as film, photographs, documents, books and artefacts. The site accommodates several British Army regimental museums, including those of the Parachute Regiment (named Airborne Assault) and the Royal Anglian Regiment.Based on the historic Duxford Aerodrome, the site was originally operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the First World War. During the Second World War Duxford played a prominent role during the Battle of Britain and was later used by United States Army Air Forces fighter units in support of the daylight bombing of Germany. Duxford remained an active RAF airfield until 1961. After the Ministry of Defence declared the site surplus to requirements in 1969 the Imperial War Museum received permission to use part of the site for storage. The entirety of the site was transferred to the museum in February 1976.

  • Absolutely brilliant. Plenty to keep you entertained all day. Get up close to some iconic planes. Staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. Had a great day out. Also easy to find just off motorway junction. A great day out
  • Incredible.. The best 'museum' day me and my kids have ever had.. One of the best things is although it's a big site with some serious aircraft, it has an intimate feel, not least because of the amazing volunteers who help run the place.. I'd never seen a Phantom attack aircraft before (my favourite of the day, is the business..) or a Huey chopper (M.A.S.H anyone?). Concorde, an F fighter (I think..) and amazing bi planes, and lots more.. Was so delighted to see that they had pilots flying some of the planes, for the public on the airfield next to the main site. The skill of the pilots was unbelievable, like aerial martial arts.. Might want to call ahead to check about this part, we saw a lot of planes today. ;-) What else.. Great cafés, fantastic children's play area, at least half a days worth of entertainment, and some crinkly old American dudes who must have been ex pilots.. :-) Such an incredible place, next step for us is the season ticket, only £35 a year for an adult.. Enjoy, and chocks away..
