Trip Planner: Europe / UK / Scotland / Scottish Highlands / Loch Ness Region / Drumnadrochit / Urquhart Castle
Perched on a bluff overlooking Loch Ness, the rocky ruins of Urquhart Castle serve as a reminder of the area’s long history. Once one of the largest castles in Scotland, the ruins of the structure are remarkably well preserved considering its age, so you can get a good sense of medieval life just by strolling through the remaining baileys and corridors. A visit to Urquhart Castle represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Drumnadrochit travel route planner to plot your vacation.

Urquhart Castle reviews
We booked a bus tour from our cruise ship to the Urqhart Castle and Loch Ness. Our tour guide was very entertaining and knowledgeable. There was a light misty rain happening, which was perfect... more »
For the size of the place it’s not worth £9.50 each to get in. Feels like a tourist trap. Can walk round in about ten minutes. Can view the lot from the main road or up the hills. Save your cash and..... more »
Very beautiful castle. A good stop on any tour. Note: if your visiting multiple castles, you can buy combined tickets or passes. If you can plan ahead you will save some money. The guided tours were at particular times and were free with entry. They are super informative and I really enjoyed them. There is signage as well. Additionally, they have a bespoke publication that talks a lot about the site. In Scotland, there is also some brands of alcohol that are only sold at the castles! On my first trip, I bought a bottle as a souvenir. On my second, we made sure to get another bottle because it was enjoyable. If you have movement accessibility needs, parts of this castle will not be easy for you to traverse. However, I still think it’s worth going even if you can’t climb to the top. Call ahead and talk to staff to for details. Enjoy!
Amazing place, views... Nice coffee shop and little cinema with 8 minutes history film about the castle. It is only ruins but make you feel like you travelled in time. Amazing views from every part of the ruins. We have spent there few good hours and our 6 years old didn't get bored. Staff very nice and helpful.
