Chester Cathedral, Chester

4.7
Must see · Religious Site · Church
Chester Cathedral stands as a fine example of an English monastic church. It features New Red Sandstone in its construction, creating a pinkish hue on the outside and inside. Take a tour of the cathedral, which the cathedral offers for free but asks for a small donation. Pay special attention to the stained glass of the West Window, the Nave Mosaics dating to about 1880, and the organ with 4,894 pipes. Your guide will point out all of the cathedral's significant architectural details, some of which extend back to about 1100. If you're in good shape, go up to the Cathedral at Height exhibition in the bell tower. Inside the bell-ringing chamber, you'll be up close to the stained-glass windows, with views over the town. As this is a functioning church, you're also welcome to attend services. • Amazing place to visit, Very well thought measures with how to deal with these COVID wary times. Nice shop as well and some nice bits and pieces 👍🏻  more »

  • Had a nice potter round the cathedral. Free to enter but with a suggested donation of £4pp. Quite noisy inside, the free price being both blessing and curse. Stained glass modern but spectacular. There is no fee to enter the cathedral although they do ask for donations. The exterior is beautiful as are the grounds, the interior is breathtaking too and it was a great place to spend an hour.
  • Lovely cathedral and great exhibitions. Nice way to waste a couple of hours. More interesting than you think. Gift shop has a nice selection of items for every taste.
