King's College Chapel, Cambridge

4.6
Home to the world's largest fan vault, King's College Chapel is one of the finest examples of late Perpendicular Gothic English architecture. This chapel to King's College of the University of Cambridge houses some of the finest medieval stained glass in the world, created by Flemish artisans from 1515 to 1531. A glance above the altar reveals a masterpiece: "The Adoration of the Magi," originally painted by Rubens in 1634. The Renaissance rood screen, erected in 1532 by King Henry VIII, creates a striking contrast to the Perpendicular Gothic chapel. This active house of worship is home to the King's College Choir due to its splendid acoustics. Hours differ depending on the college term and special events that may close the doors. • The scale and the beauty of this chapel are amazing and all achieved with the technologies of 5 centuries ago. It was reassuring to see the maintenance work carried out by today's specialist...  more »

  • We went to Chapel during our Cambridge university tour. Great architecture in a silent place. The colourful desinged window glass is awesome. Highly recommend to visit.
  • Was able to attend "Evensong" here and was blown away by the beautiful sound of the choir. It was difficult to hear the readings and prayers (anything not sung by the choir). I don't know if they didn't use the microphones, they were broken, or just don't have any - but that was a bummer. The guides they provided seemed to be more of a distraction/disruption to the service than an assistance. I would just listen next time as opposed to trying to follow along. Sadly, they don't allow pictures once the inside (during Evensong anyway),
